Nagasaki University Staff Play Active Role in Combatting Measles Outbreak in Samoa

In 2015, the Japan Disaster Relief Team (JDR), whose secretariat is located within JICA, established the Infectious Disease Response Team.
As members of this team, Dr. Hirotomo Yamanashi, Dr. Takayuki Tanaka, and Dr. Momoko Yamauchi, all of whom belong to the Department of Clinical Medicine in the Institute of Tropical Medicine at Nagasaki University as well as the Department of Infectious Diseases at Nagasaki University Hospital, and Dr. Kohei Fukushima, a pharmacist and graduate of the Graduate School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, conducted diagnostic activities in Samoa.

In November 2019, the Samoan government declared a state of emergency due to an outbreak of measles in the country.
At the request of the Samoan government, the Infectious Disease Response Team was dispatched to the country from December 2 to 29, 2019.
