Major Activities

The Nagasaki University Africa Research Station was established in 2010 alongside the Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine’s Kenya Research Station, which was established in 2005, in order to support the university-wide activities in Africa based on the long history of friendly ties with Kenya dating back to the dispatch of a medical mission to the country by Nagasaki University in 1966.
In addition to the implementation of research projects on infectious diseases and international health by the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University is pursuing a wide range of research and other projects in Kenya. The Faculty of Fisheries and the Faculty of Engineering implemented a now-completed project (LAVICORD) for the restoration of the lake environment and fishery industry in Lake Victoria, Kenya. The Faculty of Engineering is also providing support for a robotics contest in Kenya. Meanwhile, the School of Dentistry is conducting research on dental public health, and the School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences is conducting research on aging issues in the region.
The Center is also widely used by other universities in Japan to conduct research projects using the Center’s equipment as well as by the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. It also serves as an educational site for undergraduate and graduate (master’s and doctoral) students in Kenya.
