Member Makeup: Those who have come from NIHE (Vietnam National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology) to our graduate school and completed their studies
Since the 1980s, Nagasaki University has been building cooperative relationships with local research institutions such as the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), and many Vietnamese researchers have obtained doctorates and other degrees from Nagasaki University. In 2005, a permanent research base of Nagasaki University was established within NIHE, and there is much international joint research being carried out.
The NUGAN Vietnam Branch was formed in 2023, the year where the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam was marked, and is centered around Dr. Tran Thi Nguyen Hoa, who obtained a degree from Nagasaki University and is currently affiliated with NIHE and engaged in joint research with Nagasaki University.
In September of the same year, a reception was held in Hanoi to commemorate the establishment of the association, and 36 alumni, including Associate Professor Do Duy Cuong of Bach Mai Hospital, attended the event with guests of honor such as NIHE’s former director, Professor Dang Duc Anh, and others, and they renewed old friendships.

NUGAN Alumni Gathering in Hanoi

On July 28, 2025, President Nagayasu and a delegation from Nagasaki University visited Hanoi and hosted a NUGAN (Nagasaki University Global Alumni Network) alumni gathering for members based in northern Vietnam.
The gathering brought together many alumni who had completed graduate programs such as the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Institute of Tropical Medicine, and the Faculty of Education, and who are now contributing to various sectors in Vietnam.
President Nagayasu expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the participants for choosing Nagasaki University and contributing to its global community. He also shared his hopes that the alumni would continue to strengthen their mutual ties and serve as bridges between Vietnam, Japan, and Nagasaki University.
It was a memorable evening that reaffirmed the strength and potential of the NUGAN network through cross-generational and interdisciplinary exchange.
NUGAN Alumni Gathering in Ho Chi Minh City

On July 31, 2025, a NUGAN (Nagasaki University Global Alumni Network) alumni gathering was held in Ho Chi Minh City, with participation from President Nagayasu and representatives of Nagasaki University.
The event brought together a diverse group of alumni who had studied at Nagasaki University and are now working in a wide range of fields across universities, research institutes, hospitals, and companies in and around Ho Chi Minh City.
The gathering was filled with warm conversations and lively exchanges, as alumni shared memories of their student life in Nagasaki along with updates on their current work and research activities.
President Nagayasu expressed his hope that such reunions would not only strengthen the bond between alumni and the university, but also contribute to furthering the relationship between Vietnam and Japan.
It was a heartfelt occasion that highlighted the growing presence and accomplishments of Nagasaki University alumni in Vietnam.
