Acting Director General and CEO at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Visited Nagasaki University

On November 24, 2023, Director General Elijah Songok and Dr. Samson Muuo Nzou of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), paid a courtesy visit to President Nagayasu of Nagasaki University, Trustee Ito, Professor Kaneko, Assistant Professor Saito, Professor, Morita, and Professor Tamaki.

Since 1966, not long after Kenya gained independence, Nagasaki University started conducting medical support activities in the country and, now, there are almost 60 years of exchange between the two. Close affiliation between Kenya and Nagasaki University started upon the establishment of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in 1979, when a professor from Nagasaki University headed a group dispatched by OCTA (now JICA), the main provider of support to Kenya at the time.

Nagasaki University is currently working to increase the number of medical researchers at KEMRI by providing short-term, master’s, and doctoral courses that seek to produce new leaders in the fields of infectious disease and public health. In 2006, a permanent station connected to Nagasaki University was established at KEMRI and since then the two institutions have worked together actively in the realms of educational and research.
